The Risk Factor Of Loneliness

According to social psychologists, loneliness can affect human physical health caused by stress. Stress is a well known risk factor for attracting heart dis-eases and other conditions.

A 2006 study published in American Sociological Review revealed the following facts:

1. Americans had fewer friends than they had 20 years prior.

2. In 1985, the average American claimed to have three close confidants including spouses and family members.

3. By 2004, the average American had only two close confidants.

4. One in four Americans reported having no one to talk to at all.

5.  Up to 20 percent of Americans are unhappy at any given moment due to social isolation.

If money alone could buy happiness, the happiest people on earth today would be those living in the capitalist societies.
